"One of my big ahas while transitioning to intuitive eating and detoxing from diet culture was realizing we’re not all meant to be smaller."
We aren't all meant to be smaller. This HAS to be true. Different genetics, different body shapes, different everything. Why would all people be healthier when they're rail thin?
Fascinating that you had help with trauma etc too to help you Kristi. Are you aware of the Adverse Childhood Experiences study? One of the things the researchers discovered was that people would diet and lose weight but put it back on again due to trauma from their childhoods.
Karen, I'm not familiar with this study, but I will check it out. It's not surprising that trauma often stops people from sensing in their bodies, sensing period, really. Growing up, it was not safe for me to have or express emotions; it was actively discouraged, through threat of violence (verbal abuse). I've had to do extraordinary work to tap into emotions. The EMDR and other somatic sensing work has been so helpful.
I am sorry to hear this as I wouldn’t wish it on others, but I also know it’s all too common. I feel like there are so many factors that determine success. I’ve done EMDR before without success, but this time I was ready to do the work and found the absolute best person to help me.
I will send you a link as soon as I can find it. 😊 It strikes me that underlying a lot of these kinds of issues is a lack of self-worth. I am writing about this for myself right now trying to untangle it but I think that not honouring our own needs is linked to low self-worth due to unresolved trauma. And many people find it hard to seek help because of low self - worth. It can be a bit of a vicious circle. I have tried many different modalities (EMBR, Matrix - reimprinting & Nlp being among them) with varying success. 😁 It's great when you find something that works. 💜
I am going to give Body Code, Emotion Code, Belief Code a go as I have found someone who seems to get good results. I will remain hopeful until all avenues are used up. If that doesn't work I may be back in touch to see who you used. :)
I do love my parents and it wasn't there fault. Ignorance, lack of awareness, very young etc and still the trauma has to be processed and reeased from the body.
I don’t know if I can answer your question because I’m still in my first year of intuitive eating and I’m not aware of most of the “mistakes” I’m making. 😝 I will say that I try to come from curiosity—what will my body look like in a year or two? And flexibility—I can always go back to how I was eating before if I want to… I’m not interested in trading one dogma for another! I’m interested in aligning my actions with my values. 🤷🏻♀️ Right now intuitive eating works for that!
Congrats to you! It sounds like you're doing it right. Coming from a place of curiosity (versus judgment, which seems to be the other end of that) is so important and can really be a game changer.

I had a similar upbringing. 🥴

Here's a link to a video of the man who was in charge of that study I mentioned. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q22Zt6aGwsA
